Commonplace Books

Commonplace Books

Although there were few printed books in the 15th century, handmade paper did become more available and with it emerged the practice by readers of copying verses, prose extracts, and pithy sayings into blank books. The verses were often Biblical in nature or were arranged by a reader according to a common theme. The Commonplace Book developed as a personal book of a reader’s own particular interests.
Spiral Blank Books

Spiral Blank Books

Seastone Papers produces a variety of multi-purpose, one-of-a-kind, spiral bound books. Varying in size, some books, such as the long list books, are perfect for note taking, doodling, watercolor landscapes, and listing. Larger books can become visual journals—combining image and word. The spiral binding provides room for adding collaged materials for nature journals, photo books, or travel logs. Others are perfectly proportioned for dream journals or the pocket-sized "just had an idea" journal. Covered with handmade paper, the mood and tone created by the covers often dictates the nature of the journal. The interior pages are either blank with visible laid lines for writing or heavy weight for drawing and painting.
Coptic Blank Books

Coptic Blank Books

The coptic stitched book is based on a method of open spine binding developed around the 2nd century AD by early Christians (Copts) living in Egypt. Replacing the scroll, these early coptic bound books are characterized by sections of parchment, papyrus, and later, paper attached with chain link stitching through the folds of the sections. The sewn bindings offer interest to the design details of the book. A coptic stitched book allows the book to open fully and lay flat. The coptic stitched books created at Seastone Papers consist of handmade paper covering the book boards and handmade paper introducing each section of the textblock.
